AUTHORS INTERVIEW
What inspired you to write, "If she had only said sorry"?
Adderley: I am quite blessed as a teaching assistant to have so many holidays, but that summer in 2006 I was beginning to feel quite bored and restless, and my husband who got tired of me pottering around the house asked why didn’t I write and complete that novel I was always dreaming about; and when I told him no, he suggested maybe there wasn’t a book in me after all so I set out to prove him wrong. I completed my first draft in two months.
Is it your first novel?
Adderley: This is my first completed novel since the five that I’ve attempted in high school but never had the courage to finish.
What means to you being a writer?
Adderley: I’ve always been surrounded by books from I was little, (my mom is an avid reader) and started keeping a journal from I was five years old, although I had to hide it my from my sisters, as I got older. Writing means the world to me in every level and I can’t begin the express the depth of emotions I feel in being able to touch the world with my words.
Is your main character inspired by anyone real?
Adderley: Co-incidentally enough, I had an argument with my sister on the same day that my husband challenged me to write a book, and I remembered saying to myself if she would only say sorry, maybe I would find it in my heart to forgive her and suddenly I thought ’I could make a book out of this!’ Growing up with three sisters has its good moments and bad, but no, the main character isn’t inspired by anyone real.
Can you see anything of yourself in your characters?
Adderley: I am very passionate about the secret coves in Long Island, so I see something of myself in my main character in that regard. My neighbour would always know where to find me when I went hunting for sea grapes or crabs along the beautiful north Bahamas coastline.
